Love, that mysterious, unpredictable feeling we get, remained a mystery to me for many years. I knew that lust and love were not the same, but I couldn't explain the differences. So I kept diving into hot relationships with very short fuses.
The highest, purest and most rewarding form of love is unconditional love. It makes no demands, and no strings are attached. We do not "fall" in love as though dropping through a trap door. We grow into love.
Love is a choice; one made every day. The choice is to know another person totally, warts and all, and still choose to love them. It means accepting someone just as they are and not needing to change them. The ego may say we need to change someone or "fix" them. That isn't love.
We need to understand that we are responsible for our own peace of mind and happiness. No one else can "make" us happy.
It is difficult? Of course! Just as everything else worthwhile is difficult. But the rewards are beyond measure.
When we love unconditionally we not only build strong, trusting relationships, we engender growth within ourselves. We learn acceptance and forgiveness, and that "unconditional love" brings light to dark corners.
As we give that love to others, we find that it increases our own self-esteem, and we begin to forgive and accept ourselves as well.
Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, American scientist and physician, said, "The ultimate lesson all of us have to learn is unconditional love, which includes not only others but ourselves as well."
And that's the truth about love
